#Relevnt | An Interview with Peter Labat IV, Owner of The Labat Wood Shop

Chicago-based The Labat Wood Shop owner,  Peter Labat IV loves to work on his woodworking, so much so that he’s turned it into a thriving business. He began storing projects that looked amazing, affordable, and easy on Pinterest in 2016. Soon, Peter was into various woodworking like carvings and furniture.

“The thing that captivated me about woodworking, is that it could be both beautiful and functional.”

Peter Labat IV

He started by making things for his home and gradually collecting tools. He spent four years perfecting his woodworking craft then in 2020, Peter lost his job as a navigational watch officer in the Gulf of Mexico.

Instantly he knew he’d be starting his own furniture company. Thus, The Labat Wood Shop was born.

The Labat Wood Shop

Let’s Get Lifted!

Drops or salve; Why?

I’m embarrassed to admit I haven’t had either. We don’t get many of these options in New Orleans, and I imagine it’s the same way in other places where cannabis isn’t legal. I’m hoping that as my business grows into stronger cannabis marketplaces, I’ll get to try things like this.

If you could be a cannabis superhero, who would you be?

I think I would be ‘Super Chill”. A guy who can make everyone sit down and be quiet haha. I love peace, quiet, tranquility, and calm. I hate commotion, chaos, and confusion.

What are your top 2 smoking songs?

This might be the hardest question. Curren$y is my favorite canna-rapper and one of my top of 5 overall favorites. His whole library is filled with smoking hits. But the two most acclaimed are Famous – from Pilot Talk 2 and Surface to Air from the How Fly mixtape with Wiz Khalifa

Dab into Business!

How did The Labat Wood Shop get started?

So, The Labat Wood Shop is a woodworking company first and foremost. We specialize in custom furniture building and design; it just so happens that our signature product is a premium rolling tray made from exotic hardwood. So we are not necessarily a cannabis brand. We’re more cannabis adjacent.

I started woodworking as a hobby in 2014. I loved how versatile and creative you could be with wood. You can carve and sculpt it to make artwork or use it to build furniture. You can paint it, stain it, toggle between classic and vintage styles, build coasters to houses, and everything in between.

I had already fallen in love with the craft, and planned to monetize it in some way before the pandemic. So when I got laid off from my job due to Covid, I already knew that I’d be starting a woodworking company. Now here we are, still charging ahead, trying to stay afloat!

RELATED: #Relevnt | An Interview with Tracey Schultz, Owner of PuffN Pretty

Describe your niche in the cannabis space.

As I said, our signature product is a premium rolling tray made from exotic hardwood, but it’s much more than that; it’s a Companion! See, your typical rolling tray is made from cheap, thin metal easily dented or damaged and has those goofy Scooby-Doo graphics printed on it.

That might be cool when you’re in college, but not when you’re a seasoned stoner. Most avid cannabis users are grown-ups, businessmen, and women who are working professionals and even have kids. No one who pays a mortgage should have to roll their flower on one of those goofy trays. We offer a more mature option to the marketplace.

We named it the Companion to show people that this is a LIFETIME smoking accessory. The last rolling tray you’ll ever need. We all cherish those moments when we finally sit down to roll up. Whether it’s the wake and bake or the nightcap, and when you pull out your one-of-a-kind smoking Companion, it makes that moment even more special!

Did you face any legal or criminal barriers to cannabis entry? If so, how did you overcome the barriers?

Thankfully, I’ve never faced any issues like this. The closest criminal encounter I’ve had was being busted hotboxing in my homeboy’s car down the road from our college. We saw the police car rolling upon us so I hurried up and swallowed the blunt.

The cop told us to exit the car, and when we did, of course, hella smoke poured out, but there was nothing left for him to find. He asked us what we were doing here, and we told him we were students. He just told us to go and never come back. We were so shook I think we quit smoking for about a week haha.

WHAT ARE SOME TALENTS, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND KNOWLEDGE that YOU have TRANSFERRED TO CANNABIS?

I think I’m a very sociable person! I enjoy conversing with people about interesting topics. Hobbies, jobs, life, and whatever gets us both excited enough to truly engage with one another.

I’ve always been organized and structured though as well. So I know how to use my time wisely, accomplish tasks, and stay productive.

WHAT ARE SOME TALENTS, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE that YOU Have PICKED UP WHILE IN CANNABIS?

How to be a salesman! I’ve had to really sharpen my sales skills since being in business. Knowing how to talk to customers, tell them what they want to hear, and explain my company and product well. Learning where to find customers and how to attract them.

Which tech tools did you use to start The Labat Wood Shop?

  • Wix for my website
  • Quickbooks for bookkeeping
  • Instagram and Facebook for marketing/sales.
  • Getting into Tik Tok now.
  • Inshot for photo/video editing

How does The Labat Wood Shop stand out from other brands within your target population?

The Labat Wood Shop stands out as a brand because there aren’t any household woodworking brands inside the cannabis space that I’m aware of. Raw makes wooden rolling trays, yes, but not out of exotic wood, and their trays don’t tell a story or have a name like ours do!

For them, it’s just another product in their line, and that’s okay. We want to be a household name for wooden rolling trays inside the cannabis space. What Raw is to rolling papers, we want to be to rolling trays.

I’m a woodworking enthusiast, so I’m more passionate about woodworking than cannabis, and I think that’s what makes us unique.

Tell us about The Labat Wood Shop’s top products and services.

Our signature product is The Companion, a premium rolling tray made from exotic hardwoods such as maple, African Mahogany, and walnut, just to name a few. Each Companion is completely unique because no two trays have the same grain, just like no two people have the same fingerprint.

It’s a classier/more mature option than the rolling trays you see on the market, and every hardworking, seasoned smoker should have a premium rolling tray in their collection. They’re built to last a lifetime, so you’ll literally use them every day.

The Labat Wood Shop

Pass it Around!

What have been some highlights with marketing The Labat Wood Shop?

Actually getting recognized! We’ve been on the front page of the newspaper, interviewed by blogs and great organizations, I’ve been recognized in the street by people who follow our Instagram, and have made some really great new friendships on social media as well.

All of it is extremely wonderful, and we couldn’t be more grateful! We take advantage of every opportunity we possibly can to network and grow our brand.

What have been some challenges THE LABAT WOOD SHOP has faced with marketing?

Actually making sales!! Actually generating revenue!! I think a lot of people like our product, but we’re just not seeing the numbers. We don’t have enough outreach! Not enough people are seeing us, and when they do see us, I don’t think we present like a “company.”

I think we present ourselves as an artist/woodworker/small business. But we have a lot of “irons in the fire.” There’s a lot of momentum generating, and we’re expecting a really big boost in November and December. The holidays will obviously be huge, but we’ve also got the Black Cannabis Conference in November, and I am 100% confident that we will meet the people who will help catapult us to the next level!!

SHOP THE LABAT WOOD SHOP FOR THE HOLIDAYS

What’s The Labat Wood Shop’s silver lining to it all?

Knowing that if you push through, you will succeed!! You gotta go through the grit and grind to come out on top.

The Labat Wood Shop

What are some best practices for advertising The Labat Wood Shop?

We don’t advertise well. So we rely solely on social media posting for advertising. We haven’t fully implemented our budget yet, so we don’t run “ads”; we just post. And we don’t really post strategically. We just…post. Our real advertising strategy is about tapping into influencers.

We will definitely skyrocket if we can get our trays to Curren$y, Wiz, and Snoop.

What are some best practices for growing your audience on social media?

I wish I knew. Nothing I do seems to work, lol. I just be pouring my Lil heart into those reels. Still waiting for one to go viral.

What’s some advice you have for folks that want to enter the space?1 response
Find your niche and dig into it. There are so many people going into business. Not just cannabis, all businesses.

If you want to set yourself apart, you have to brand, and branding is nothing more than telling your story.

Dab into Business!

How did you get started; why?

I was ready to change the trajectory of my life. I was beyond bored with corporate, so I started researching how to start my own business. I kept getting signs that I needed a business that ignited a fire and sparked my passion. I knew the universe would guide me….so cannabis it was.

What’s your niche in the cannabis space? Why?

I help women elevate their wellness with cannabis. I connect them to quality flowers, support their well-being, and inspire them to elevate to their highest potential. I feel cannabis has allowed me to be more comfortable on my healing journey, and as a healer, I wanted to remove the stigma of cannabis use for other women.

Founder and CEO Tracey Schultz is an African-American woman and an advocate for cannabis. She adds a unique perspective to the industry because she uses cannabis to manage her multiple sclerosis symptoms. Queen Tracey is determined to show up in the industry as her best self, dedicated to total well-being with two princesses as her motivation.

Did you face any legal or criminal barriers to cannabis entry? If so, how did you overcome the barriers?

No

What are some talents, skills, experience, and knowledge you picked up while in cannabis?

Every day I’m learning a new way of doing things in the marketplace. I’m a business processor analyst, so I’m curious about how the industry works. I research, question, and analyze the corporate setup and the laws in which they can operate as a business. I think it’s important to know the laws. When you know how it works then, you learn how to move properly.

What tech tools did you use to start your brand?

Social media- google research, YouTube.

How do you stand out from other brands within your target population?

Actually, I’m still working on that. My focus is connecting to the women and not solely selling to women. I want to educate about the benefits cannabis can provide to those wanting holistic relief to their health issues.

Tell us about your top-selling, promotional, or new product or service.

The “machine.” Nikki Minaj has a verse in her song “seeing green” that goes like…” no one bitch could be my oops that shit offends me; it’s the corporate giants and machine that went against me. I felt her on that. Algorithms and corporate policies have been brutal. On top of that, I also get in my own way.

What’s your silver lining to challenges?

The caves in which we fear to enter holds the very treasure we seek to find…..and so I keep going.

What are some best practices for advertising your brand?

Networking

Dab into Business!

How did you get started; why?

My health journey brought me to cannabis. Once I realized that cannabis saved my life, the passion for talking about the plant and my health journey was overwhelming.

I started by creating a nonprofit to educate people about proper health and wellness and improve access to cannabis and other alternative health methods. We did this for six years, closing in 2021 due to the pandemic.

I have continued to create my show, The Wendy Love Edge Show, and I am now building the Wendy Love Edge Brand.

What’s your niche in the cannabis space? Why?

Healer, Educator, and Support to Patients. I think my passion for the plant, coupled with my health journey, has created a space for me. Or maybe I made it by marrying these things authentically.

#Relevnt | An Interview with Cintia Morales, Co-Founder of Higher Education Hemp Tours

In this weeks podcast, we interviewed Cintia Morales Co-Founder of Austin, Texas based Higher Education Hemp Tours. We talk about how Hemp Tours came about, why she’s fighting to educate people, and her thoughts on cannabis marketing.

Let’s Get Lifted!

Drops or salve; Why?

Salves, bc I can apply it on almost anything!

If you could be a cannabis superhero, who would you be?

Tejana Terpenes

What are your top 2 smoking songs?

Any Dre & Snoop song has my vote.

Dab into Business!

How did Higher Education Hemp Tours get started; why?

In 2018, I was at a crossroads with my career and decided to take a break. At that time, my friend/business partner Leah, was going through something similar. Seeing that I was on a break, I decided to accompany her to Kentucky to learn more about hemp. As a result, we realized that we wanted to be in the space.

After the 2019 Texas Hemp Bill passed, and we were able to start realizing this dream.

We followed our strong suites (teaching and business consulting) to create Higher Education Hemp Tours – an educational consulting team for new consumers and entrepreneurs in the industry.

Need Access to MMJ Treatment? Click Here.

What’s Higher Education Hemp Tours’ niche in the cannabis space? Why?

Education & Consulting. We call it EduTainment. In other words, we curate unique experiences, and educational materials for consumers and brands. We do not sell any products.

Did you face any legal or criminal barriers to cannabis entry?

Just the normal legal barriers with our legal team and accountant team trying to explain the space. And, having our process payment shut down time and time again because our customers are cannabis businesses.

What are some talents, skills, experience, and knowledge you transferred to cannabis.

Teaching! That has been my passion for years. I have been an educator for over 15 years now and luckily that has been an easy transition to this.

What are some talents, skills, experience, and knowledge you picked up while in the cannabis space?

I’ve genuinely picked up having and setting boundaries. Unfortunately not everyone in the industry is here to help out the community and only really want to help themselves. I’ve learned to say no to the right people.

What tech tools did you use to start Higher Education Hemp Tours?

Sooooo many; where do we begin. For our online courses, we use the Teachable platform. We use Clickfunnels for our website. In addition, we use Canva, Later, Flowpage, and MailChimp to create content.

How does Higher Education Hemp Tours stand out from other brands within your target population?

Currently, we do not see many people doing what we are doing, so that is one way of standing out. However, the best way is that we work with Verified brands. Higher Education Hemp tours makes sure that the brands we present to the community, follow the following 5 things minimum:

1) License: Reseller certificate and hemp license (if applicable)

2) Insurance: General Liability /Product Liability

3) Lab Testing: if retailing cannabinoid products, 3rd party full panel COAs available on request (if applicable)

What’s Higher Education Hemp Tours silver lining to challenges?

The silver lining is that it has forced us to think of ways to DIRECTLY communicate with our target audience, so we have switched to a lot more collaborations and content creating in a variety of platforms.

What are some best practices for advertising your brand?

Since we are not plant touching, and our focus is educating, we have teamed up and collaborated with already on going events that don’t have to do with cannabis or hemp. That 1) helps us reach a new audience 2)allows us to directly connect with new people.

What are some best practices for growing your audience on social media?

Be strategic, authentic, and smart about what you post. Make sure you are aware of the banned hashtags and wordings from some social media platforms. Also, tag and comment as much as you can! Interaction is key!

What’s some advice you have for folks that want to enter the space?

Take a look at the supply chain, the ENTIRE SUPPLY CHAIN, and see where your expertise would fit! Don’t try to do something you have never done without having the right team or people around you that can support and advise .

#BuyBlack | An Interview With Adelina Sanchez of Leafly Therapy

Written by: Adelina I. Sanchez

Think Different!

The encouragement of CBD use is now louder and pushed harder than ever. During a global pandemic, months of quarantine, and community & political tension, this has prompted consumers to actively research and find the different types of ailments CBD can help alleviate. The market offers CBD oral drops, pre-rolls, vape pens, edibles, candles, teas, topicals, and more. Like other industries, hype can cause over-saturation and enable a reduction in the integrity of products which could allow entrance for false promises by those looking to make a quick dollar.

I, Adelina Inez Sanchez, am the owner and licensed massage therapist of Leafly Therapy. My mission is to merge both the massage and the cannabis industry to push to the medical forefront. The three components of this business consist of:

  1. Customized medical massage services (to help alleviate symptoms of arthritis, fibromyalgia, M.S., PTSD, menstrual cramps, and more).

2. Bespoke CBD infused skincare products (from body butter, Epsom salt, liquid soap, to personal lubricant).

3. Most importantly, Education (E-book “Green Thumb Guide, for Massage Therapist”)

Rather than riding on the CBD wave, I decided to fully immerse myself in the industry to learn about it before practicing. What makes my company different is my personal experience, my passion, and my expertise on the benefits of CBD and the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is intensive. Leafly Therapy is certified in CBD/THC and the Endocannabinoid System.

I have over ten years of working with the medically fragile, chronically Ill, athletes, PTSD, veterans, and gynecological ailments. Lastly, I wrote an eBook for massage therapists; filled with clinical trials.

#HarvestMoon | An Interview with Tracey Schultz of PuffnPretty

Background!

I’m Tracey Schultz, mental elevation guru and founder of PuffnPretty.

I currently work as a healthcare business analyst and I am an introvert. I transitioned from prescription drugs to cannabis for my multiple sclerosis diagnosis. I currently balance being a single mom, caring for my dad, career, and entrepreneurship.

I’m interested in creating my own CBD/THC strain and use my brand PuffnPretty to remove the stigma of the plant.

Dab into Business!

How did you get started; why?

I got started by going to hemp conventions. I attended networking events in the Dallas area to become familiar with the industry. I rarely saw someone who looked like me. I didn’t see products made for me that catered to my culture. I decided to be the change and created a brand to inspire, educate, and provide products for women like me.

What’s your niche? How do you stand out from others?

I help professional African American women living with multiple sclerosis feel confident with using hemp to elevate their wellness. I stand out because I focus on creating products for women and represent my culture.

What excites you about being in the industry?

The vast opportunities the industry can provide for African Americans.

I see us owning farms, creating grow houses, creating brands, and strains that cater to wellness. This is our time to seize the industry, make us a priority and establish generational wealth through wellness.

What are your thoughts on CBD businesses as essential, coronavirus, COVID-19, government relief, and/or patient access?

The CBD business is completely essential at this turbulent time. Everyone such as the elderly, children, and pets benefit from CBD. COVID has wreaked havoc on the world. The government smh – we have to save ourselves. Patient access is ridiculously shitty for those living in restricted states.

What are some of the effects COVID-19 has had on you, family, friends, your businesses, etc.?

It has bought about great pain and suffering to everyone and everything. Im looking forward to the light at the end of the tunnel.

#HarvestMoon | An Interview with Dominique & Brian of Sterling Alternatives

Out of Columbus, Ohio, Dominique & Brian came together from different sides of the cannabis plant before creating Sterling Alternatives. Sterling Alternatives is focused on combating the struggles women face each menstruation cycle with broad-spectrum CBD products.

On their journey for quality information in the psychedelic space, they found a lack of people of color in the industry and knew they wanted to create opportunities for other black and brown individuals looking to enter the market.

Keep reading to find out how they’ve adapted their business to the new normal and what keeps them going during COVID19.

If you could be a cannabis superhero, who would you be?

CannaMan & KiefChick

What are your top 3 smoking songs?

Savage РMegan Thee Stallion ft Beyonc̩, Day & Night Kid РKudi, & Mask Off РFuture

Background!

Prior to starting Sterling Alternatives, my partner and I had starkly different experiences with cannabis, both positive & negative. However the more we searched for products and wanted to try things, the less reliable information we could find. We then were introduced to Cannabis Talk 101, and from there the world of Cannabis was wide open to us.

Dab into Business!

How did you get started; why?

Both of us were tired of the lack of diversity in Cannabis, and wanted to create a space where not only can we create a business for ourselves, but we can help other POC along the way.

What’s your niche? How do you stand out from others?

Sterling Alternatives focuses primarily on menstruation and all of the associated struggles that can come with it. And because we understand that being THC free is important to a large number of people, we also wanted to ensure that we offered the best Broad Spectrum products that we could.

What excites you about being in the industry?

The fact that we have a chance to be Cannapreneurs and build something for ourselves, our families, and our community is what brings us such joy & excitement. The industry is so new & fresh, so we have a great chance to accomplish this goal.

Storms don’t last forever, and neither will this pandemic.

Dominique & Brian

Pass it Around!

What are your thoughts on CBD businesses as essential, coronavirus, COVID-19, government relief, and/or patient access?

I think it’s about time all cannabis is deemed essential, since it’s been proven time & time again that there can be some amazing health benefits for people with safe use. It’s a landmark decision that should set a precedent to make some changes on a federal level. We believe in regulation, not restriction.

What are some of the effects COVID-19 has had on you, family, friends, your businesses, etc.?

Personally, both myself & Brian are now working from home full time, and only leave for anxiety fueled grocery trips lol. It’s isolating at times, but it’s the safest way to avoid getting sick! We’ve seen local businesses step up and offer solutions/support and we want to do the same.

Follow Sterling Alternatives on Facebook

How has your business adapted to the pandemic?

We were already extremely focused on cleanliness (one of us had a germ phobia prior to this lol) and have began completing orders wearing masks & gloves for extra sanitation. We’ve also been having lots of sales & deals to lower prices for our customers at this time.

What are some of the experiences people have shared for coming to you during this time?

People are scared & anxious. There’s so much uncertainty surrounding the economy, the global pandemic & their own personal health that they’re coming out looking for help & support, and that’s what we are here to provide. Our customers include front line essential workers that count on us and we can’t let them down.

What’s your silver lining?

Storms don’t last forever, and neither will this pandemic. We just need to get over this health crisis and as a nation, adjust to healthier lifestyles. Only then life can get back to our new normal.

What’s some advice you have for other CBD businesses?

Do your research, and don’t lose your morals!

What are some tips for self-care during #StayatHome?

Be kind to yourself, and don’t feel forced to come out of this with a new skill/money making scheme. It’s okay to rest.

Do have you any specials, giveaways, discounts you’d like to add?

Yes we do! Currently everything is BOGO free, with the exception of our bundles. We’re also getting in some PPE! Stay tuned for announcements on that ☺️

#THC2020 | An Interview with Dionne Davidson of Houston Academy of Cannabis Science

According to The Minority Report 2018:

Only 10% of women have positions with cannabis investment.

However…

Women are pushing hard to find more success rather than letting the obstacles stop them. Ancillary firms and technologies are becoming a prime target for women wanting to start their own cannabis business.

The Minority Report 2018
C.E. Hutton Faith Integrity Trust

Texas’ own #THC2020 vendors, owners of Nu-Wellness Today and Houston Academy of Cannabis Science educators, The Davidson family aren’t letting anything stop them from reaching their hemp goals.

Introduce yourself to the people.

Hi, my name is Dionne. I am the Marketing Director for the Houston Academy of Cannabis Science. I’m passionate about this beautiful plant that we call cannabis, and what it can do to help people. Not only does it offer relief from pain, anxiety and depression, it really is something that brings people together. That’s what we’re all about, love. And, it’s what we believe in.

What motivated you to travel to The Texas Hemp Convention?

This is a big deal in Texas. It’s so new here. Myself, my sister Devae, along with our mother Dr. Davidson, who is the CEO and Founder of the Houston Academy of Cannabis Science, want to be a part of the growth.

The Texas Hemp Convention is definitely worth the investment. I mean, you can’t put a price on the amount of people that we’ve made amazing connections with.

It’s crazy being a part of the academy. Inside of two years, we have our retail store Nu-Wellness Today, so it’s only up from here. It’s a bonus to have product to show. We’re really excited about where it’s going, and looking forward to the future.

Are you crunk about all the opportunities waiting for you in the hemp market?

  • Dominic’s Growing Background
  • Challenges to Licencing
  • 7-Pack Premium Hemp Pre-rolled Flower
  • Maintaning Patience
  • Advice
  • What’s Next

It was easy to get lost in the lights and movement at the Texas Hemp Convention. However, Dominic Ratliff with Happy Hemp Farmacy was there for one reason only. The people.

Introduce yourself to the people.

My name is Dominic from Chattanooga, Tennessee. I’ve been a hemp farmer as well as a medicinal practitioner for about four years now. I switched over to CBD since [cannabis] isn’t legal in Tennessee, to help people with anxiety, insomnia and stuff like that.

It’s legal for me to grow [hemp] with our Tennessee Department of Agriculture License, and I just want to put out quality craft products for people that they can enjoy.

Tell us how Happy Hemp Pharmacy got started.

Happy Hemp Farmacy LLC is pharmacy fresh. My friend was a business major at the University of Tennessee. He knew I was growing out on the West Coast. One day I saw him, and he had already started in the brand. I came up to him like, Yo, I grow and I have a lot of experience in it! We just came together.

His brother’s a chemical engineer, so he does all of the formulation. We put a little ad on Facebook for another farmer. This guy in Chattanooga reached out but was growing medicinal headed in Detroit.

We all came together to form this brand. We all have different expertise that keeps the company going.

Always, be dedicated.
