An interview with Rena McCain, Cannabis Activist and Influencer
The death of Bushwick Bill, legendary founding member of the Houston group Geto Boys, has been a blow to the global hip hop culture. The Texas rapper lost his battle with cancer June 9th. As we shared Geto Boys memories, born and breed Houstonian, cancer survivor, cannabis activist & influencer Rena McCain is using her social media platforms to pay homage to the artist. Despite the musician having stage four pancreatic cancer, she trusts cannabis could’ve helped him.
“I love music, I have to have it in my day”
Rena, affectionately known as GanjaGrrl420, is spinning Bushwick’s music on her weekly show, ConversationswithGanjaGrrl on Mountain High 10 Radio, “I wish there was more I can do, more resources to help more people” says McCain. She uses her platforms to advocate for the LGBTQ community, to end sex trafficking, and promote legalization of cannabis. Rena has dreams of freedom for cannabis prisoners. She’s also an admin of several other pages.
Her chopped and screwed social media contributions provide a missing link for her Texas followers, and the thousands more she reaches. Her platforms provides cannabis curious folks a safe way to educate themselves about the benefits, politics and laws affecting us around legalization.
Keep reading to learn more about how this #TX420PIONEER’s passion for human rights, music and marijuana has helped her advocacy and overcome social media boundaries to reach the masses!

Let’s get lifted!

If you could be a cannabis superhero, who would it be; why?
Myself ! Everyone else is already taken !!
Dabbing into business!
Tell us about your company, what’s your brand’s objective?
I’m an activist ! I am the Ganjagrrrl420 and I host 2 podcasts! On sundays its #mountainhigh10 radio (conversations with GanjaGrrl) and on Mondays its Canna-Curate on Discord ( Gettin Screwed in the Greenhouse) on Greenhouse Radio. Also, I have a column called Star Buds in the Montrose Star which is Houston’s own independent newspaper for over 40 years…my objective is to educate as many people as possible about the benefits of cannabis , and to help to change restrictive laws in Texas and nationally through education about jury nullification and other methods. I would love to integrate more help for the homeless as they could benefit from its legality the most..imo ! Think hemp housing.
Which social platform does your business use & how many followers/reach/impressions do you have?
Facebook is generally my platform..my highest reach has been 69k for 1 month but usually falls around 50k . I have around around 1000 followers on that page on my page .
How do you use social media for your business?
I use my social media to promote others with the same mind-frame …and the same desire to see cannabis legalized . I participate and admin numerous groups as well as my own .
What has been some of your greatest accomplishments using social media?
There are so many accomplishments ! When I first started my activism on social media I had very few people I interacted with. I knew them all so my biggest accomplishments is just being on it in the first place…with new faces ..for me it drives my anxiety insane sometimes. It’s definitely difficult to reach others when you constantly are afflicted with chronic anxiety and depression as I do…cannabis helps enormously!
What’s the biggest barrier to your success on social media? How did you approach the situation?
My biggest issues on social media is the cliques and the backstabbers and liars and s*** talkers. They make it hard for people to even want to be on social media with the negativity. I wouldn’t call it a barrier though …the Facebook algorithms are mostly the barrier. If u can manage to break that…ur doing good
Who is your audience?
I will literally talk to anyone who will listen ! Hopefully some of my audience is uneducated so I can help them learn some amazing things about this awesome plant
What is the main message your brand is trying to communicate?
Cannabis is Medicine!
What excites you the most about being an industry pioneer?
It excites me to be on the forefront of much needed change . I would love to be able to see all the jails and prisons emptied of all the cannabis prisoners!
Any upcoming events?
I have a couple in the works
pass it around!
What’s some advice you would give cannabis-curious folks seeking reliable and accurate education on the internet?
Check out my website ! Ganjagrrl420.com
What’s some advice you would give someone wanting to use social media to enter the Texas cannabis industry?
Wow ! That’s tough ! Don’t trust everyone !! Just because a person advocates for cannabis legalization doesnt mean they are are not backstabbers or triffeling people or even have the best intentions for you . Ive found lots of selfishness in the industry.
That isn’t to say that there are not some truly amazing activists …there definitely are !!! Just be choosy 😎
Where do you see Texas with legalization in 2019?
I wish I had an answer ..Dan Patrick is not doing ANY Texans any favors ..and he should be removed as he don’t care what the will is of the people who put him there.
What’s the #1 thing people can do to advocate for legalization?
Advocate for its legality at the ground level …blanket legalization will never work …legalize it totally like #berriesandtomotoes
